I have been playing disc golf casually since 1995 or ‘96. The first course I remember playing was Kaposia in South St Paul. It was early spring with snow hanging around in the shadows. I had no clue what I was doing, but Josh and the gang assured me this was GREAT fun! I stopped counting my score when it reached 25 over par by hole #12. Even with my ridiculously high score I wanted to play again.
Who would have thought throwing a little plastic disc would be so incredibly fun?
A few years ago I noticed that Jer, Josh and Jim were really increasing their level of play. Getting beat was really getting old. I had been throwing side-arm up until last year. I found a vid showing a highly rated disc golfer, Im sorry to say I don’t remember who it was, who threw both side-arm and backhand depending on the situation. I decided last year that I would try to incorporate a backhand throw into my game.
After throwing backhand for a few rounds I was convinced I had ruined my arm forever. I was putting to much power into my throws, on muscles that weren’t ready for that much force. I almost gave up. I took good care of the arm over the winter and this year I started training the arm early. I watched an read anything and everything I could find on the net about grip and throwing styles. I bought the Scott Stokely video series. I was hungry for knowledge on ways to improve my game. I started playing more often and going to an open field to practice.
The practice and training has paid off so far!!! Driving using a backhand throw has increased my range by 30-50 feet on average and I CAN NOW OUT DRIVE JER, who typically was the distance thrower in our group. My confidence on the course has increased now that I can switch up my throws as the situation requires.
I have been a little nuts this year in my purchase of disc golf equipment. I think seeing the positive results from really focusing on my technique has fueled my passion for playing the game. Its somewhat difficult to explain how excited I am about playing disc golf. I absolutely love this game!!!! The other guys have all picked up on the fever this year which just makes me want to keep it going!
